Sex Addiction: A Clinical Diagnosis or Just Bad Behavior?

Popular media have made the term “sex addiction” a prime-time subject of today’s news, sitcoms and talk shows. Although Freud warned that it “is the original addiction and clinicians have been treating since the 1980s, the DSM-IV omitted it as a diagnosis and the general public still sees the term as an excuse for bad behavior. Yet there are thousands of men and women who, over the past 27 years, have successfully changed their “bad behavior” of compulsive sex through the help of treatment programs and 12-Step support groups for sex addicts. In this presentation, you will learn:

  • The definition of sex addiction and how it differs from and is similar to sex/ love addiction
  • Symptoms of addiction to sex or sexual relationships
  • How the Internet affects addiction to sex and sexual relationships
  • Practice-based assessment and treatment of addiction to sex and sexual relationships
